John was truly a renaissance man. His knowledge of art, architecture, literature, music and antiques was amazing.He was an exceptional friend and neighbor and truly a great human being. We were so happy with our Timberframe barn in Hickory that he and Mark spent countless hours working on. Our hearts go out to the Mahla family and also our prayers. He will be sorely missed.

John walked back into our lives 2 years ago and he barely missed a beat. When we first saw him, it was like going back in time. Although he would spend time with my father, I had not seen him in 40 years. When we met again, he was exactly the amazing, kind, gentle soul that we all remembered him to be when he was 16. He was my brother George's best friend and our family talked of him often. When we reconnected with him 2 years ago it was such a bright light in our lives. John had such a calm spirit and will be missed by many. My deepest and most sincere condolences to the Mahla family. Monie Talpas and family
