Obituary of David A. Scott

David A. Scott, late of South Fayette Township and formerly of Upper St. Clair, passed away on Saturday, May 4th, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a son of the late William W. Scott, Jr. and Cecelia Bednar Scott, and is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Leslie Ann Johnston. He is also survived by his much loved sons, Benjamin (Chrissy) and Matthew (Cara), and their children: Carter, Keegan, Teddy, Olivia, and Patrick. Dave is also survived by his stepchildren: Bobby Johnston (Annie), Paul Johnston (Kathleen) and Erin Johnston Hurley (Michael); who welcomed him unreservedly into the Johnston family, along with their children, Dave’s beloved step-grandchildren: Liam, Grayden, Kieran and Kade Johnston; Owen and Peter Johnston; and Hazel and Henry Hurley. Lastly, numbered among those Dave loved and who loved him over the course of his lifetime are his surviving brothers: William W. Scott, III (Cindy), Joseph P. Scott (Cheryle), Michael F. Scott (Linda) and his sisters, Mary Scott Walker and Elizabeth Seton Scott (Infant) who predeceased him, and by his many cousins, nieces and nephews. Dave attended St. Luke’s Grade School (Carnegie,) Canevin High School (Crafton,) the University of Notre Dame and New York University School of Law. His law practice spanned more than 50 years. From 1974 until 2004 he practiced at Thorp Reed & Armstrong, after which he joined two close friends, forming the law firm of LeClaire Griewahn & Scott LLC where he worked until his retirement in 2024. Dave was an active member of the communities in which he lived and worked. He was a long-time member of the Allegheny County Bar Association and served many years as a member of the Board of Directors of the St. Francis Health Foundation. For over 20 years Dave was a volunteer for UPMC’s Family Hospice and Palliative Care (and its predecessor.) Dave also regularly donated blood over decades at the Central Blood Bank, giving up this opportunity only when his health prevented him from continuing. Dave was also an officer, director and coach for the Upper St. Clair Athletic Association for many years. As he moved toward retirement Dave volunteered to review claim files for the Pennsylvania Innocence Project on behalf of incarcerated individuals. He also spent the past several years as an officer and member of the Board of Directors of the Villas of Wood Creek, the residential community he and Leslie called home. Dave wants everyone to know how grateful he is for the grace, prayers, cards, calls and support he received over these past few years from family, friends, neighbors, law colleagues and health care providers. With special recognition of his brother Michael and sister-in-law, Linda, all of these extraordinary people, with their warmth and love and humor, have extended Dave’s stay here on earth. Finally, Dave wants all to know he has no regrets. Instead, he has enjoyed so many of the rich and rewarding things life offers with few of the troubles that so often are our companions along life’s journey. Family and friends received on Wednesday from 6-8 PM and Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Warchol Funeral Home Inc., 3060 Washington Pike, Bridgeville (412.221.3333). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10 AM at Holy Child Church of Corpus Christi Parish. Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Moon Twp. Donations in Dave’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice, or to Holy Child Catholic Church, 212 Station Street, Bridgeville, PA 15017, or to St. Angela Merici Parish, 2701 Kelly Street, White Oak, PA 15131.
