Obituary of Marion F. Scureman

Marion (Fry) Scureman, 101, died on February 15, 2024, Bridgeville, PA. She was born on June 18, 1922, in Wilkes Barre, PA, a daughter of George F. Fry, Sr. and Marion Frances Fry. As a child Marion was an excellent student and active in the Girl Scouts and was dubbed “the personality kid” by her schoolmates. Marion met the love of her life John Bernard (Jack) Scureman while they were both students at Meyers High School in Wilkes Barre, PA. Their courtship was consummated when Marion and Jack were married on July 10, 1945, while Jack was on leave from training as a naval aviator in World War II. When the war was over and Jack returned to civilian life, the couple started a family in Wilkes Barre that grew to five children. Marion more than held her own with five very headstrong Baby Boomers. Marion encouraged both academic achievement and participation in school activities and took great joy in her children and their accomplishments. Marion moved with her husband to Pittsburgh and when her children were in school full time she worked as an administrative assistant in the Keystone Oaks School District. Among her many talents Marion was very artistic and enjoyed playing the piano. With the passing of her husband, Marion became the much-loved Matriarch of the family, doting over all her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Marion’s positive outlook and congenial personality drew family and friends to her all her life. Marion enjoyed the company of friends, entertaining at home or dining out. Marion also enjoyed traveling annually to California or Wyoming to visit with her siblings. Marion moved into Country Meadows when she was 91, and enjoyed socializing, playing cards, and playing bingo. Marion is survived by her sister Barbara Fry Stewart and her children Carol S. Matchinga, Betsy S. Smith (Jim), J. Michael Scureman (Michele), Robert P. Scureman (Paula), and James J. Scureman. Marion was known as Nanny to her 9 grandchildren, and she loved that her 20 great grandchildren called her “Nanny the Great”. Her nieces and nephews knew her as Aunt Meme, a nickname bestowed on her as a child by her brother George. Marion was preceded in death by her parents, George and Marion Fry, her husband, John B. Scureman, her sister Jane Fry Jones, her brother George Frear Fry Jr., her sister-in-law Helen Elizabeth Fry, brother-in-law Dr. William Stewart, in-laws John and Marie Scureman, sister-in-law Mary Naomi Morgan, brother-in-law Robert H. Morgan, and her grandson Nicholas Smith. Friends received Monday, February 19, from 11:30 am – 12:30 pm, at which time a service will be held at 12:30 pm, at the Warchol Funeral Home, Inc., 3060 Washington Pike, Bridgeville (412-221-3333). Interment to follow in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Bridges Hospice or The Country Meadows Co-Worker Foundation.
