Obituary of Teresa Eileen Splain

Age 97 of Scott Township, on Wednesday, May 13, 2015. Reunited in heaven with her husband Maurice Splain, Jr. who passed away in 1989. Survived by her son M. Daniel Splain (Elizabeth) of Royal Palm Beach, FL, daughter Sheila Fischl (Earl) of Mount Pleasant, SC and daughter Maureen Bittel (Frank) of Dublin, Ohio. She is also survived by grandchildren Stephanie Splain, Lesley Hammerly, Jack Bittel, Neil Bittel, Meredith Fischl, Evan Fischl and great grandchildren Alexis Splain, Laina and Riley Hammerly and Kaylin Barger, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving are four step grandchildren Carmilla Tatel (Merwin) and Emily, Kim and Daniel Stolkowski and 3 step great grandchildren Elena, Maya and Julia Tatel. Her great granddaughter Alexis holds a special place in her heart. She also loved the caregivers who became part of her family in her final years. She is also survived by special friends Mary Ann Minella, Rose DiMarco, Bonnie Ringer, Val Jennings, Cindy Capozzoli, Anna Rogenski and Doreen Catizone who were caregivers who became family in the last years of Teresa's life. She was born May 22, 1917 in Monaca, PA to Harry and Mary (Cronin) Billigen. She moved with her parents at a very young age to Bridgeville. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by brothers Charles and John Bernard (Helen) Billigen and her sisters Harriett Watts (Roy) and Mary Ritenour (Ed). After graduating from Bridgeville High School in 1935 she worked in Harrisburg for the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and was involved in drafting Pennsylvania's Child Labor Law. She later worked for the Department of Revenue. While working in Harrisburg she met the love of her life Maurice Splain, Jr., who later became State Chairman of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party. Following their 1946 wedding they resided in Scott Township. Mrs. Splain served on the Democratic State Committee for most of the 1960's and 1970's. She was the heart, soul and strength of our family. Friends will be received on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Warchol Funeral Home Inc., 3060 Washington Pike, Bridgeville (412-221-3333). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Grace Church, Bower Hill Road, Scott Township on Saturday at 11 AM; where Teresa had been a parishioner for 65 years. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the Carnegie Library for the Blind, 4724 Baum Boulevard, Pittsburgh, PA 15213. Friends will be received on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Warchol Funeral Home Inc., 3060 Washington Pike, Bridgeville (412-221-3333).
