I served with Joe on Council for 4 years, and while we didn’t see eye to eye on many issues, he was always kind to me. I just heard of his passing recently and want the family to know I’m praying for them.

To Magoo's Family
I mean no disrespect using the only name that I knew him. Magoo was my friend way back in 1963 when I was junior and he a senior. He was my dancing buddy and boy did Magoo know how to dance. I felt so lucky to have been a partner as honestly he was the best dancer. I had always hoped I could have seen him again and reminisce about the good old days My family still lives in Canonsburg. My brother would run into him and and my brother would tell me Magoo asked about me. I pray that your hearts are filled with the sweetest memories and laughs. Magoo was truly one of a kind and I like many others have been blessed to have known him. Sincerely, Jane Gazvoda Marsh

To Mr. McGarry's Family / Friends:
Deepest Sympathies to all of you for your loss - it is the loss of many. When he started out as a teacher he probably went into that career hoping to make an impact on at least some lives - I hope he realized how many lives he really did touch over his many years at Canon-Mac and I am sure there are many outside of school also. His friendliness, humor and genuine kindness was just some of his qualities as everyone knows - he would call out to you in a parking lot or see you in a store and come over with that big smile to talk with you and ask you about your life, parents, siblings and just wanted to take a true interest in what had been happening since school or the last time he saw you So many lives were blessed by knowing him. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you. May all the memories you made /had with him over the years give you strength, peace and comfort when you miss him the most - there is no doubt that someone like him will be sending back signs from heaven to each of you . May He Rest in Peace.

I was very fortunate to have Joe as a teacher in junior high. Years later he became a member of my extended family when he married Rose and our paths crossed again. I hope he knew what a positive impact he had on so many lives. He was one of those people who brightened your day just by saying hello. I consider myself lucky to have known him.

I have known Magog since I was about 10 years old. I remember his first day of teaching at Canon Mac. I said hey Magog and he pulled me aside and said in school it is Mr. McGarry and then smacked he on the back. We would play football in Jack Morgan’s backyard and it was Magoo, Bill Potts and Bill Morgan against about 10 of us younger guys. They usually won. I was so glad to see him at my class of 68’s class reunion 5 years ago. Rest in peace Magoo. You will be missed by everyone that ever met you.

I had the honor to know Mr. McGarry when he was just starting out teaching and I was in high school. Later, Joe and I became colleagues at Canon-Mac, and Magoo and I became friends. I think anyone who ever met him became his friend! Mr. McGarry, Joe, Mago -- Our community has lost a very special spirit, and he will be very sorely missed.

Rest in Peace Mr. McGarry. I always loved running into him, most often it was at the Shop N Save. I would joke with him that I could hear him before I could see him. But that always meant he was going to brighten the day. It was hard to walk away without a smile and a little lighter of a heart. What a Special Spirit he was. He made the world a better place…a True Blessing! He will be missed.

Joe was a close family friend. When we were kids, he would dress up as Santa every Christmas, to pass out presents to us. I bowled in a couple of different leagues with him for years. We traveled all over the country with the White Eagles, to bowl in national PNA tournaments. He was as much a part of our Greek community as any of us Greeks. He will be missed by many many people. If you didn't laugh, or at least crack a smile every time you ran into him, there's definitely something wrong with you. RIP my friend.

He was my favorite teacher ever! He was always so kind to me in school. I would stay after school to do the bulletin board above the black board. So enjoyed having a beer or two with him at the White Eagles too! Such a vibrant personality that will be truly missed.

Mr. McGarry was, by far, one of my favorite teachers. He cared about his students and always made us laugh! My favorite saying (that I still use to this day) is “Ya Snooze, Ya Lose!” When I got my first teaching job, I went to him for some advice because I was going to be teaching PA History. He gave me all kinds of things to use, told me the best supplemental materials, etc. He was so excited that I was teaching something that he taught me, many years ago. He was a wonderful man, mentor and educator. He will be truly missed! I wanted to find the picture of him in his “Ya Snooze, Ya Lose” shirt but I could not find it. But I did find this picture, in an old yearbook, that I thought to share. Rest easy. Jodi Petro Fulks

One of my very favorite teachers . I had him for social studies in middle school . One day I wore an ugly Christmas sweater my aunt made me to school and it lit up so he called me electric from then on . Even up to a few years back while I was running the whisky rebellion 5k in canonsburg I heard a voice yell “Electric “ and I knew exactly who it was turned around to see his smiling face and energetic personality … I was amazed that he recognized me from literally 25-30 years ago . He really was amazing and will always be remembered. Rest with God ❤️

Joe McGarry "Magoo" was a favorite Alpha Chi Rho Fraternity Brother. I roomed with him at the frat house and enjoyed every minute of it. All the girls danced with him at the Friday night dances on campus. He was there favorite dance partner because he had "all the moves." We spoke by phone often and kept in touch through the years. I will miss him...He was one of a kind.
