What a blessing it was to have gotten to know Ms. Florene. She shared such amazing stories, had an infectious laugh and outstanding mind and an incredibly caring heart. My condolences...She shall be missed.

In the winter of 1975, Maureen and I accompanied Florene on a drive up to Mercyhurst College, where she had a meeting in the late afternoon. Maureen and I were sophomores in high school, and Florene wanted us to have a chance to investigate the campus as we would begin our college search the following year.
We met Florene after her meeting and drove along the main road down to Lake Erie to see a frozen wonder while it was daylight. We parked at the beach. Florene stayed in the car while Maureen and I explored the icescape created by frozen spray from the Lake that towered above the frigid waters below. Afterwards, we had dinner at a restaurant at the end of a pier in Erie. A blizzard began as we were eating. By then it was dark and snow was blowing sideways as we headed back to the car. I asked Florene what were we going to do, since the road was barely visible, it was snowing so hard. She replied that we were going to drive home. I felt safe and warm in the backseat, as Florene drove Maureen and me back to Bridgeville in her tiny, green LeCar. We were the only vehicle headed south on I-79 on that dark, cold, snowy night.
Florene was a woman of confidence and integrity, fun and laughter. She was a great role model to me growing up, as family and education were paramount to her and Jack and to my parents. I will close this remembrance with a quote by the Irish writer Kate O’Brien (1897-1974): “And she did not know that she carried armour.”

Always in motion...cooking rare beef for 40 or 50 with Uncle Jack and his eggnog, taking coats while focusing on the nieces and nephews and remembering their interests, greeting and hugging some while talking politics with others and directing the show. I will always be in awe of your "can do" attitude... "imagining" and being brave to ask others to join and help with their talents in the vision to benefit others. Miryam's was blessed, as was I, to work with you and to observe your endless energy and spirit. You helped many, but you taught all of us the simple and important life gestures that matter greatly.
When I think of you, Aunt Flo, I always smile, then ponder you with such admiration. You will forever be a gift to all of us.
We will remember you and celebrate your life and send hugs to John, Dan, Kathleen, Maureen and families.

“Aunt Flo” — always a loving example of selfless service to others. Her wonderful laugh, sparkling eyes and delightful smile alway greeted us with love. Her warm and welcoming home was a favorite place to gather with our cousins and extended family, especially around Christmas when Uncle Jack would appear dressed as Santa Claus.
