We were: longtime friends since 1968; served on many FAA aviation security and anti-hijacking committees as FAA officials; general partners on five limited partnerships that we formed and (with limited partner investors) purchased various tracts of land which we later sold to developers etc. for profits to all partners. Also: Catherine and Joe and Mary and I were social friends and took many summer vacations together during those years. They were wonderful people and we enjoyed knowing them.

Joe was Deputy Director of the FAA's Aviation Security Service when I first met him and he had been at the forefront of developing the US aviation security system, in the process, forming relationships with officials in governments around the world seeking to emulate the US aviation security model. (I am attaching a copy of the cover of an FAA newsletter picturing Joe as he successfully managed an aircraft hijacking.) Joe retired from the FAA to launch AVSEC, a ground breaking international aviation security consulting firm. Joe's clients included foreign governments who valued not only his expertise, but also his unflinching integrity. Joe and I became fast friends due to our Pittsburgh connection and our friendship grew over the years to include Catherine and my husband Rege. Joe was one of the finest men I will ever have the privilege to meet, an honest and true friend. The world will be much smaller and lesser without him in it, and we are so very saddened by his loss.

Joe Blank was one of the nicest men I ever knew. He was devoted to his wife, Kay, and took care of her for the last 11 years of her life. He was partly French and told me that was why he was so stubborn. I went to visit him often in the past year, and loved listening to all his stories. He was devoted to Maggie, his Wheaton Terrier, who always sat by his chair or bedside. He wanted Maggie to have a good home when he died. I will miss him.
Affectionately,
Kathy Trainor
