I find words to be fruitless when I speak of my Uncle Gildo and what he has meant to me. During these days I will mourn and honor the loss of a great man, who marked my life with such positive influence.
There are many wonderful moments that Uncle Gildo took part in during my life: Giving Marián and I his blessing on our marriage this past December, our many glasses of wine with biscotti, our talks on gardening, and of course Italy.
However, if I could share one moment it would be the time him and I went to see the Cardinals and Pirates play in August 2005. Naturally, the Cardinals won, much to his liking, yet for me it meant the world. It was a night where we talked about the one great love we shared: baseball. That evening was like "Field of Dreams" for me.
I will miss calling him from Valencia during every Cardinals-Pirates series and talking about the ballplayers, the history of the game, and of course hearing his opinions on the great players that he saw. Also, I always loved his Cardinals apparel throughout his house, there it was always baseball season.
There are many things I will miss for sure, but he always told me that I need to be excited about looking forward to the future so that I do not miss out on it. Now I am left with a pleothra of memories, wonderful experiences etched in my mind for eternity.
So, on Saturday, like him and I did so many times, I will sit down here in Valencia with a glass of red wine in hand at 7:00 P.M. (1:00 P.M. in Pittsburgh), and watch a baseball game in his honor. I am sure he would approve.
We miss and love you so much Uncle Gildo,
B.J. and Marián
