Obituary of Paul W. Amic

Paul W. Amic, 80, of Bridgevile formerly Canonsburg, died peacefully, surrounded by family, on Saturday, July 21. Mr. Amic was born on August 20, 1937, the son of Paul A. and June (nee Clement) Amic of McDonald. He was a 1955 graduate of Canonsburg High School, where he lettered in football, baseball, track, and wrestling. He notably also played third base on the 1956 Strabane American Legion baseball team which went 22-0 and won the Western Pennsylvania championship. Mr. Amic served honorably in the United States Air Force and served as a police officer in his home town of Canonsburg. He earned degrees from Point Park College (now Point Park University) and Duquesne University. He became involved with public life in 1970, serving two terms as a member of Canonsburg’s borough council, before, in a time of crisis, stepping into the role of borough manager and helping lead the town’s 80s redevelopment renaissance, which culminated in Canonsburg being named America’s most livable city. Mr. Amic later served as assistant Washington County Controller, before continuing his career in city management in other communities around Pennsylvania including West Mifflin, Springettsbury, Bethlehem, Bridgeville and Cecil. Mr. Amic remained a sports enthusiast throughout his entire life, with a particular affection for high school wrestling and the program at his alma mater, Canon-McMillan High School. In his retirement, he penned six books on wrestling, all of them love letters to the sport and the program. His seventh book, an unpublished work, “American Soliloquy”, was a love letter to the only thing more important to him, his family. Mr. Amic is survived by his wife, Carole, and five children, daughter Paulette Carpenter, sons Robert Amic (Kimberly) and Paul Amic, Jr. (Jill), daughter Theresa Congie, and son Sam Congie (Misty). Also surviving are sister Nancy Mazza (nee Kunkle), brother-in-law Don Mazza, grandchildren, Monica, E, Zachary, Sammy, Dylan, Mason, and Demi, and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding Mr. Amic in death were his parents, daughter Christine Congie, step-father Arthur Kunkle, and his beloved aunt and uncle Lucy and M Sgt Roy L. Stone. Friends received Sunday, July 29, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM, in the Warchol Funeral Home, Inc., 3060 Washington Pike, Bridgeville (412-221-3333), where a service will be held Monday, July 30, at 9:30 AM. Interment with full military honors to follow at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Twp. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Canon-McMillan Wrestling Alumni Association, 409 Mary Lane, Canonsburg, PA 15317.
