Obituary of Frances Selan Sossong

Frances Sossong of Dauphin, PA passed away on Wednesday, June 7, 2017. She was known as Faye to her family and friends. Born Sept. 21, 1918 in Upper St. Clair (formerly Beadling, PA), the daughter of Matthew and Anna Selan. Faye was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, William H. Sossong. Also preceding her in death were her brother, Matthew F. Selan (Violet) and sisters, Anne Bombassaro (Joseph) , Agnes Barziloski(Aloysius), Louise Bianchin (Joseph), and Ruth Bianchin (Valentino). She is survived by her only child, Anna Marie Sossong, with whom she lived at the time of her death. Faye was a great sports fan. She loved her Pittsburgh Pirates, Steelers and Penguins. She was a champion duckpin bowler and played basketball and softball for the Goldenson Vanities, one of the leading independent ladies teams in the 30’s and 40’s. As a teenager, it was her greatest thrill to play in the original Madison Square Garden. At age 32 she decided to try the game of golf. Over the years she won championships at Aliquippa Country Club and Ligonier Country Club as well as the Metropolitan Golf Assn. of Michigan. She ended her golf career as a member of The Country Club of Harrisburg where she actively competed until she was 92. After the death of her husband, she decided to attend Westmoreland County Community College to upgrade her office skills. Eventually she was employed by the college in the Public Relations Department of the college. Some years later she was transferred to the new Laurel Education Center at Latrobe as site manager. She retired from that position in 1996. Family and friends received on Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Warchol Funeral Home Inc., 3060 Washington Pike, Bridgeville (412.221.3333). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10 AM at Holy Child Parish, 212 Station Street, Bridgeville, interment to follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to: St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, 607 Stoney Creek Drive, Dauphin, PA 17018.
