Edward Peter Schumacher, lovingly known as Pete or Mr. Schu, passed peacefully surrounded by family at the age of 89 on Sunday, February 16, 2025, in Azle, Texas.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on September 19, 1935, Pete was the first child of Martin Kenneth and Genevieve Catherine (Ryan) Schumacher. Pete spent the first 51 years of his life in Pittsburgh. He attended St. James Catholic School in Wilkinsburg and was a proud graduate Central Catholic High School, Class of 1953 where he built lasting friendships that spanned over 70 years. He went on to earn a degree from Duquesne University.
Pete’s life changed forever on December 28, 1952, during a holiday drive to look at Christmas lights—when he met the love of his life, Maureen (Noble). They married in July 1963 and went on to build a beautiful life filled with laughter, adventure, and love.
In 1987, his career with Westinghouse took the family from Pittsburgh to Orlando, Florida, eventually leading to Austin, Texas, and later back to Central Florida for retirement. Wherever they lived, Pete and Maureen were natural hosts—welcoming family and friends with open arms, Maureen’s great food and Pete’s legendary drinks.
Pete had a zest for life that was unmistakable. He was never happier than when “surf-sitting” on the beach with a cold beer in hand, or cheering on his Steelers. A passionate gardener, he grew everything from lush vegetables to fruit trees and always took pride in a well-tended yard. He loved to travel with friends and family making memories that we will carry for a lifetime.
Above all, Pete was a devoted husband, exemplary father, loving brother, and cherished friend. His final years were spent in Saginaw and Azle, Texas where he enjoyed holidays with extended family, his son in law’s cooking and afternoon drives to the lake to enjoy a milkshake.
Pete is survived by his daughters, Gretchen Romayne Schumacher of Avon, CO and Kate Wallis Schumacher (William IV ) Etscorn of Fort Worth, TX; his sisters Jeannie (Robert) Staley of Frisco, TX and Kathy (Donald) Murray of Dallas, PA. He is reunited in peace with family and friends that went before him including his beloved wife Maureen (Noble) and his brother Martin Kenneth Schumacher Jr.
Pete’s life was one of joy, generosity, and love—he will be deeply missed and forever remembered with a smile.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at St. John Fisher Catholic Church. Pete and Maureen will be laid to rest together at Restland Memorial Park in Monroeville, PA.
